SWEET POTATO FARMING

Image
How to plant 1. Make a hole 6 inches deep and 12 inches apart 2. Bury slips(vines cuttings from sprouted sweet potatoes) up to the top leaves 3. Press the soil down gently but firmly 4. Water well Sweet potatoes mature in 85 to 120 days and they are extremely frost sensitive Plant them in full sun 3 to 4 weeks after the last frost when the soil has warmed Loamy soil with a pH of 5.8 to 6.3 is preferable for sweet potato growth Sweet potatoes are ready to harvest just as the ends of the vines begin to turn yellow. To avoid injuring the tubers, find the primary crown of the plant you want to dig and then use a digging fork to loosen an 18inche wide circle around the plant In most parts of Malawi, farmers store the harvested sweet potatoes in a pit, covering them layer by layer with ash or dry sand in order to keep them for the dry season when food is scarce. Cooked sweet potatoes can be stored in a refrigerator, frozen, dried or canned .

TREES

Image
Trees are part of environment which play much significant role world wide. Types of trees 1. Deciduous trees 2. Evergreen trees 3. Coniferous trees 4. Fruit trees 5. Shade trees How to plant a tree The best way to plant a tree is to dig a hole that is twice the width of the tree's root ball. After placing the tree in the hole backfill with soil and water thoroughly. Newly planted trees require regular watering and should be mulched to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Pruning may also be necessary to shape the tree and promote healthy growth. The role of trees *Trees help to purify air and combat climate change : Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis which help to mitigate the effects of climate change. Trees absorb one third of global emissions every year. *Trees protect against floods and water pollution: Mature trees protect communities against flash floods and landslides by stabilizing soil and absorbing water. Tree roots also filter harmful c

POULTRY PRODUCTION

Image
Poultry farming refers to the rearing of domestic fowls especially chickens thus for eggs and meat. Many different breeds of chickens have been developed for different purposes. These general general categories include:   1. Laying breeds(layers)   2. Meat producing breeds(broilers)   3. Dual purpose breeds Poultry farming has challenges, the following are some challenges affecting poultry production 1. Parasite and diseases Parasites and diseases results into loss in egg production as well as quality meat. Parasites that affect chickens include; tapeworms, roundworms, threadworms and cecal worms. On the other hand, fowl pox, fowl cholera, coccidiosis and Newcastle are common diseases of chickens. When the environment is dirty, parasites, diseases and infection is inevitable. Birds like chicken are very sensitive to environmental changes. If the poultry environment is not properly taken care of, the chickens will be exposed to parasites and diseases. So as a poultry farmer, you must ens

GOAT FARMING

Image
Goat farming involves the raising and breeding of domestic goats. Goats are multipurpose animals which are bred for milk, meat, fibre and skins. The southern African goat population exceeds 35 million animals most of which are kept in small scale traditional production systems in communal areas. Approximately70% of southern African goats are kept under traditional management systems where the farm structure comprises of twenty goats. There are various goat breeds in southern Africa. In Malawi the most used breed is the Malawian goat and these goats are kept in small scale traditional systems in communal areas. These traditional production systems are characterized by informal, lowly skilled labor, small number of animals and limited resources. An example of a typical goat house. Indigenous goats have developed mechanisms which allow them to adapt to high environmental temperatures and achieve thermo tolerance in extremely challenging environment. These goats are resistant to heat stress,

WATER STORAGE AND CONSERVATION

Image
Water is an essential part of the environment and a requirement for all living organisms. It is one of the major components of the environment which is the hydrosphere. Nearly 70 to 80 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, among which 2% is pure water and suitable for human use. Water is one of the basic necessities for every living being and we cannot imagine life without water, therefore it is of great importance that water must be stored and conserved. Water storage refers to holding water in contained area for a period of time, it can be either natural or artificial. On the other hand, water conservation is the practice of using water efficiently to reduce unnecessary water usage. Water storage and conservation both help to meet current and future human demands.                A picture of water tank thus used for water                 storage. Water is a scarce natural resource as such it is of high significance to store and conserve water water because it has mo
